Red Scarves and Red Noses

Oh hey, I still draw digitally from time to time!
Apologies for the long absence, but finals happened and then I got sick and then the holiday blah blah.

I hope everyone else had/is having a good holiday!  Stay warm!

Water Color

Image heavy post ahead!
(also some nudity in case that matters)

And here is another batch of water color pieces done in my drawing 301 class this Fall.  I have got to say, I was VERY pleasantly surprised by how much I ended up enjoying that class, and also by just how much I learned!  I really love water color as a media and the kind of feeling and look it can give a person or object when you just let it do its own thing.  But most of all I think it seriously helped me to further my understanding of color.  Beautiful but unforgiving, water color forced me to really think about my choices and SEE what kind of colors were happening in whatever it was I was painting.  Valuable lessons were learned!

Once again I am so sorry for the terrible quality photos.  I tried using the auto correctors in Photoshop to bring back some of the color but bleh :\

Wishing Planet

My final project for this semester's digital art class

Wishing Planet from Sydni Gregg on Vimeo.

I worked really hard to apply all of the things I've been learning about Flash and animation in general to this project, and as a whole the end result was something I was very proud of.  I got some great feedback in my critique which is always welcome, since now I know what to play closer attention to for my next video.  Just overall I learned so, SO much from making this and I can't get over how happy I am about that.  Truly a testament to the fact that the best way to learn is by DOING.  Nobody ever got anywhere by doing nothing, right?

Speaking of which, my next little film thing will be my first project as a member of the Digital Art BFA department!  Yaaaayyy!  I am extremely excited to be a part of that group and my mind is already swirling with all the possibilities of where my next project can take me.

Anyway, finals are next week so I'm not quite out of the woods yet.  I am really looking forward to a relaxing winter/holiday break to rejuvenate and rest up for a busy Spring semester.  Gotta keep the ball rolling!  Good luck to all of you other busy students out there as well.  Finish strong!

Watercolor quickies (nsfw?)

It has been quite a while since I've posted.  Oops!  Been crazy busy.  In fact I still am!  Right in the midst of finals mayhem but I wanted to leave a couple of my fave pieces from my drawing/watercolor class.

Beware, many images of naked model lady are ahead!

These were all done in a sort of rapid, gesture drawing/painting cycle.  We'd get about 3 minutes on one then rotate to another in groups of 3 or 4 paintings, and we had 3 groups total.  That's a lot of paper! (but they are pretty small, like, less than 8x10)
Terrible photo quality is due to terrible photo skills.

Space Skirt Lives!

Oh hey.  So remember that one doodle that I made a while back?
Well today I decided to take a stab at animating it!

This is probably my most complete attempt at doing a walk/run cycle to date.  I wanted to give her that sense of lightness since there is little gravity in space (whoa duh), but it sort of ended up just looking like she's doing this weird step and hop thing.  There are several other things wrong with it too (some shrinkage and a bit of drifting backwards is going on).
Not quite there, but I do like it!

...

I basically spent my entire day making this.  Dang.

(edit:  hahaha ohmygod that video quality is so awful. sorry!)

Homework stuff

Here is a very very tiny little snippet of what I am working on right now.
It's basically a collection of little animations that will hopefully all come together to make the final project even marginally close to as cool as I hope it will be.  This part is actually already finished, but I just wanted to post the lines.

Sweater Weather

Guys I should be sleeping.  Or at least working on something school-related.

Gah!!

Junior Year!

The new school year is underway!  So far I have a good feeling about this year.

In my Art History class we just finished covering Cycladic figures/statues, and for whatever reason those little guys just charmed the pants off of me!  I found their design and all of the (available) history about them fascinating, and can't seem to stop doodling them all over the place now.  The minute we started looking at images of figures that had paint residue or "paint ghostings" or whatever on them, a story started immediately writing itself in my mind.  So much mystery and open-endedness surround these things it was impossible to resist!

Who's There?

Still messing around with animating in Flash!

I am probably getting way ahead of myself here by trying to animate expressions and stuff, but I just wanted to give it a shot.  There is more planned out for this little thing, but I need a break so I'll just post this part for now.  I think that converting it to a gif. messed with the speed a little bit, but that's not a big deal I guess.  I don't think I care for this style as far as animating but it works well for these little practice purposes.  That is something I have been struggling with really badly recently.  I just can't seem to land on a style that I like well enough for animating!  But then again, I think I am getting way ahead of myself here.  Just gonna calm down and keep drawing until it feels right!

'Sup

'Sup guys.

"it's so pretty..."

I think that this is my favorite part of the movie.
Too bad I am way too lazy to attempt a real background or anything.

Creative Passenger

So I realize that it is in fact the infamous "Shark Week", but I have just been on such a turtle kick lately.

I'm not sorry!

More messing with style, coloring, and turtles.
There can always be more turtles.

Just Keep Walkin'

Aw man, check out this rough lookin' thing.

Despite the sketchyness of it I am actually quite pleased with how it's coming along!  I've been reading 'The Animator's Survival Kit' and trying to apply some of the fundamentals myself.  Gosh, I can't even believe the difference it's making here!  I never realized just how important timing really was, which in retrospect seems extremely foolish.  When I worked with my charcoal and drawing paper I had no way of keying ahead and plotting out extremes or anything, so I was forced to just sort of wing it.  That is fun and has its own creative advantages, but overall I really like being able to plan out the actions and then fill in the betweens.  So nice!

I am going to polish this walk up and then hopefully do another one with some more personality to it.  Wow, after just a little bit of reading it feels like this all makes so much more sense to me now!  Like, the pieces are falling into place in my head and now I just can't wait to start experimenting with what I've learned.  There's still such a long way to go but this kind of thing is very encouraging :)

Polkadots and Scarves

Been going through a creative dry-spell these past weeks. Not so sure what to do about it though...

I really, really like drawing braids.  And hair in general, actually.

But especially braids.

2010-2011 Drawing Class and More (nsfw?)

It seems long overdo that I actually get around to posting some real drawings I've done in school and in figure study.  They aren't much but they are my favorites!  Prepare for an image-heavy post.

So there's that.
I apologize for any poor lighting or image quality.  I took photos of these with my camera and I am anything but a pro when it comes to taking pictures, even if they are pictures of... pictures.

I love that my school offers two FREE figure study nights every week!  I can't believe more art students don't take advantage of them.  But at the same time it's nice to see the same familiar handful of faces each time I manage to go.

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far!
