Testing somethin'

Oh blogger video, why you gotta be like that?

Also, does anyone out there know how to get these things to loop properly?  I messed around with it forever but couldn't figure it out.

EDIT:

Oh hey, there we go!  But now you have to click on it to see it I guess.  I wonder if there is a way to do it so you don't have to...?

Outfit 04

Needed a quick doodle break.
Feeling kinda bland and blah lately.  Gotta try to shake it off!

I am really honing my ability to substitute backgrounds and atmosphere with vague shapes and blobs of color.  Go me.

Outfit 03

Gorgeous gorgeous weather here today!

So I've noticed that I still haven't seemed to settle on any one particular "style" of drawing digitally.  I don't know why I feel like it's so hard for me to really get comfortable with any one particular way of going about it.  Like, drawing digitally for me in and of itself is really rather challenging, not to mention trying to figure out all the technical nit-picky things like settings and stuff.  It feels awfully limiting as far as range of motion is concerned.  I'm a pretty, well, energetic drawer I guess?  I like to put a lot of my body into it and really get my arms moving from the shoulder and not just the elbow or wrist.  You know what I mean?  That's why I prefer large sketch pads by far over sketch books and other small formats.  It's also why I really prefer softer media like charcoal or conté that can be manipulated more directly and quickly than pencil (for me anyway).  But I guess that in a way that's also just me being biased and a little stubborn.  I'm going to keep trying to get used to all sorts of different mediums and be more well-rounded in that regard.

Huh.  And that ends my totally unintentional rant thing.  Sorry about that!

Well spring break for me was sort of like the calm before the storm.  Things are going to get real busy real fast around here so my posts are going to become much less frequent.
Good luck to everyone as the semester begins to wrap up, let's all keep working hard and finish strong!

ps.  I got my hair cut!

Waiting. Aching.

I posted this last night but then I un-posted it for some reason.  Embarrassment?  I don't know.

Either way, I'm postin' it now!

Mei's House

My Thanks

Hm.  There are some things I really like about this and some things I don't.

But ohmygosh WHY CAN'T I GET AWAY FROM THESE COLORS??

I want to take a second to really thank those of you who have dropped a comment on my blog or even taken a moment of your time to browse through.  Words of wisdom and encouragement mean the world to me so thank you.  Thank you thank you thank you!

Home Sweet Home

I think this picture kind of says it all.

Sorry for the long-ish gap in posting.  I would have posted something sooner but I have (obviously) been feeling kind of lazy, and also our house has been having internet issues.

Still playing around with different brush settings and ways that I enjoy sketching digitally.  I don't know why but it's really difficult for me sometimes.  I like this brush though!
Mei is so funny.  It was fun drawing her in one of her many goofy positions.  She actually sleeps like that.

A Prediction...

...of the rest of the week.

What are comics.
Oh yeah, they are things that should just be left to the pros. Like her.

Also, those are supposed to be intense eye bags.

I am a quality artist.

Thinkin'

Lately I've been thinkin'.  I've been thinkin' about a lot of things.

I often find myself thinking about the things I know and the things I wish I knew.  I know where I'm going, that is for sure.  I have known where I want to go for some time now and believe you me I am hellbent on getting there, or at the very least giving it my best try.
I want more than anything to be an animator, my heart is set on it.  Over the last couple months my experience with stop-motion and the reactions and encouragement I have been able to glean from those around me as a result of my work have been invaluable.  Being able to physically test out some of the things I believed to understand about movement and timing has been a great help to furthering my knowledge. But I can't help but feel that this trial and error way of learning is too informal.  Should I read more online tutorials about the technical things I don't fully comprehend?  Can I simply supplement this lack of formal learning with how-to books and more practice on my own?  Would that- could that really be enough?  I'm just not sure.

In the end I think that patience is my constant answer.  I must remember to have patience.  I will keep working away until I get where I'm headed, and quite frankly I feel lucky to have that much.  Because honestly, what is the point in getting there if you don't know where you're going?

My apologies for this dumb post.  Only getting 4+ hours of sleep is not a great way to start the week.  Midterms week no less... yuck.

Gray Lace

I loved Mila Kunis' dress from the Oscars.  I was on the fence about it at first but then I decided that it's awesome.
I really enjoyed seeing all the purple going on out there.

But remember how I thought Anne Hathaway and James Franco as hosts was a cool idea?

I was wrong.

Down Time...

Really quick doodle today.  I am going to make a point of trying to do some more finished digital drawings here soon (aka. effort).

It feels like I have been insanely busy this week.  But today was a big day and now that it's almost over I can feel myself finally starting to calm down a little.  My second film was critiqued in class today and it was really well received!  I am so glad since I stressed out pretty hard over it.  I really wish I could post my stop motion films here on my blog but since I'm using them for portfolio stuff I just don't feel comfortable doing it :(  I'm sure I'll be able to post them eventually, so don't lose hope!

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to spring break.  Just one more week of class!  I'm not going anywhere awesome or warm but I am going home to my beloved kitties.  That picture is a pretty accurate portrayal of what life is like with them at home (wonkyness of the drawing aside).  Dolly is my grumpy old gray cat.  She's basically a diva but I love her forever.  She has always been my cat, you know?  And Mei is our mischievous but crazy cute baby.  We just adopted her this past summer and she's been an amazing addition to our family.  She's the first yellow cat I've ever had.  She's also already huge and still growing.  I miss them!  I also miss my family.  But they aren't as fun to draw as cats.  Sorry.  But take my word for it, they're pretty awesome too.

I apologize for the over-abundance of beige in this picture.  It's kind of gross.

ps.  yeah that's the same outfit I just drew from the last post.  I wear it all. the. time.
pps.  yes, we named Mei after the little sister in Totoro.  Me and my mama love that movie.
